Do Lent Generously

DAY 1: Create a generosity kit

‘Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.’ 1 Timothy 6:18

It’s a brave parent of a pre-schooler who leaves the house without prodigious quantities of snacks, spare clothing and baby wipes.

And the principle is the same for sun-seeking holidaymakers and fresher’s week undergraduates: when the journey ahead matters we all like to make sure that we’re prepared.

The Bible features so many passages like this one from 1 Timothy - beautifully clear guidance that steers us towards a better attitude for Christian living. The advice is practical too - we should ‘be generous and willing to share’ - but sometimes that’s easier said than done.

Who among us has never walked away from someone in need because we were too ill-equipped, too nicely dressed or too strapped for change?

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Part of being generous is being prepared to be generous, which is why this Lent I’m particularly excited about 40acts. Together we’re going to make time each day to put that desire to be ‘willing to share’ into action - forty of them, to be precise.

Take Action

Let’s take our lead from the pre-schooler parents and pack a bag with a few essential items that no generous giver should be without. Call it a ‘Generosity Kit’ and fill it with anything from coins and coffee vouchers to plasters and plastic ponchos. And not forgetting the baby wipes. Keep your Generosity Kit with you throughout Lent and always have an eye out for the opportunity to use its contents. And trust that God will be working behind the scenes.
