DAY 13: Share the Bible

'But let justice and fairness flow like a river that never runs dry.’ Amos 5:24

When Bible Society first came up with the idea of using messy highlighter pens to mark out passages on poverty and justice, we wanted to bless people by sharing God's heart for the poor.

We had no idea how big it would go. But now The Poverty & Justice Bible has gone worldwide and is available in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. Presidents and Prime Ministers have been given copies, and relief and development agencies such as World Vision have strongly supported it.

As the activist Shane Claiborne says, “with nearly every page you turn you get the unmistakable sense that this book is not just about me, but about a God that so loves the world.”

When people pick it up you can see their experience and understanding of the Bible change right before your eyes. They often say, “I didn't realise God was this interested in the marginalised - that he cared so much for the sat upon and spat upon.”

More than 2,000 explicit verses wake us up to issues of poverty and justice. ‘That's a lot of air time’ according to campaigner Bono.

We can bless the world by showing how the Bible is not just a bystander in the battle for justice. God got there first.

Can you think of a bigger ‘bless you’ than to share the Bible?

Take Action

Give a Bible to someone in need with a note describing your 'best bit'; a section you found particularly helpful or inspirational. Buy some illustrated children's Bibles and donate them to your local primary school or give a gift to Bible Society to provide someone with the gift of Scripture for the first time.

The Bible Society was established in 1804 to encourage the 'wider circulation and use' of the Scriptures. They make Scriptures available where there are none. They help the churches use and teach them, and they try to promote the Bible through the arts, education, media and politics. Find out more about the Bible Society here.
